Rogue Leveling Guide

Introduction

The path used to level a rogue is one of the most difficult to write as there are so many different good skills available to you but in the end it will depend totally on how you want to play the rogue. As a rogue you will probably respec more than other classes as you try and work out what build is best for your play style. The combat swords build you see here is purely for a fast leveling rogue who will not be play in groups or instances. When you reach level 70 you will respec to what your rogue will do in the end game either PvP, 5main dungeons or raiding, or grind for gold.

Fighting Strategies

The rogue class is based upon an assassin type killer. You will spend a lot of time in Stealth sneaking about and around your opponent to get behind them. Rogues have a few different types of openers that they learn as they level up but each opener will depend on the type of class you are facing as well as your level. Ambush from Lvl18 is a good opener against cloth wearing classes like priests and mages, but for this you would need a dagger in your main hand.

From Lvl22 you will have Garrote available and this can be applied without a dagger, this skill is best against mail and plate wears (Lvl40 onwards) who you may need to kite as their armor will take a bit of working through. At Lvl24 you will get what is classed as the main opener for most rogues, Cheap Shot will stun your opponent for 4sec and as you learn to use this and other stun skills like Gouge and Kidney Shot you will try and keep your opponent stunned for most of your fight.

For leveling and learning how to play this class it’s probably best to start as a sword specced rogue, as they are not directional based. For a rogue to be at their most powerful they should have daggers and be behind their target but when soloing this will very seldom happen. This is why, in the beginning, it’s best to get weapons that still do great damage but don’t require you to be in any special position to get the best out of them.

Rogues have the best single target DPS in the game but they are also right at the front with the the other melee classes like warriors. Unlike plate armored warriors though, they only wear leather armor so stunning your opponent is very important and a skill you should learn fast. As a starter you should try to master the basic stun lock. Sneak around the back of your opponent open with cheap shot then sinister strike twice then gouge. Wait till your energy has ticked twice or until gouge is almost up then kidney shot and sinister strike till 4-5 points the eviscerate, they should be dead now or very close so just sinister strike until gouge is ready then when stunned run around the back and eviscerate.

If this start to go bad a rogue has a few skills that should make things a little easier. As early as level 8 you will learn Evasion that increases your dodge chances so when the stun lock fails or your kidney shot misses you can increase your dodge chances with this skill. When up against caster make sure your Kick is used when ever its available but wait till they cast is about 3/4 of the way through to avoid wasting time. Finally when it has all gone wrong you still have your Vanish to help get away alive.
